My Favourite FREE software

Note : Be careful when installing these, as with a lot of FREE software. Some of them will try and get you to install extras such as "Ask" search toolbar or "Yahoo" toolbar etc. Not harmful but very annoying. Just read before you click.

Izark                                        Zips and unzips everything for free

FileZilla                                   Free FTP client. (for uploading web pages)

PDF creator                             Create a PDF file from whatever is on your screen, Just use it as if it were a printer.

Foxit PDF reader                     Like Adobe Acrobat (also free for the reader) but I think it's quicker and it's not constantly trying to update.

Free registry defragmenter       Does what it says on the tin

Smart defrag                            Free Hard drive defragmenter,  Check out other free software from IObit

Advanced System care              Maintenance app from IO bit. I actually paid for the Pro version but the FREE one is more than adequate. I think V4 is a bit too intrusive. Check settings.

Format Factory                        Converts just about anything to anything (Audio and Video) for FREE

Youtube Downloader                Paste in the URL of your Youtube video and it will download it for you to keep or convert.

Audacity                                  Everyone's favourite MP3 editor. Useful for making your own ringtones from songs or sound clips.

MS security essentials                At last Microsoft have got their own anti virus app' and it's quite good. And FREE

Threatfire                               NOT an antivirus as such. It monitors processes for suspicious activity.

Infrarecorder                           Who needs to pay for Nero ?, this does everything for FREE

Totally free cd dvd burner        Simple to use and effective alternative to "Nero" etc

Open Office                            Don't pay £ hundreds for Microsoft office, this is almost as good, and Free

Easeus partition manager         Just like partition magic ($70), a bit less "polished" but it works

Macrium Reflect                      Like Norton ghost, but free. Handles USB, Network backups and SATA drives.

Xenu's Link checker                 Checks all the links work properly on your website. Wouldn't it be embarrassing if this link is NG ?

Microsoft security essentials     Yes you heard right ! A freebie anti-virus from MS that actualy works better than AVG

Easy BCD                                Really good for dual booting, It edits the "BCD" (what used to be called boot.ini) with just a few clicks.

I've been searching for an easy to use, free web site creator / editor. The best I can come up with is  Netobjects Fusion essentials.

It's also worth looking at MS Sharepoint designer. It's a free download but I think you have to have MS sharepoint installed first.

I'm still sticking to MS Frontpage 2003 for the time being.

PC Gaming

Games Fully completed

Delta force 2                              - Pretty basic FPS army game but a really great intro to this genre of gaming

Delta force Land warrior         -  The next progression from DF2.

Delta force task force dagger -  DF2 improved and with a once great online gaming community. Oh how I miss you Korak + Blaggy

Delta force Black hawk down -  Based on the famous US disaster in Somalia. (or US victory if you watch the film) seen recently for £2.99 - Bargain !

DF Team sabre exp' pack       -  Expansion pack for BHD. Colombian drug barons and the Iranians are next in line for a pasting.

DF Joint Operations                  -  Online Multiplayer Warfare, The only game you'll ever need to play. Getting on a bit now but still excellent.

Escalation for Joint Op's          - Expansion for DF Joint Op's. Adds motorbikes and tanks, Great idea !

Conflict desert storm 2             - Control a team of 4 special forces guys. i don't usually like this sort of thing but it was good.

Far Cry                                        -  Great scenery, let down by low weapon damage and stupid monsters.

Unreal                                  - Took me about 3 years on and off but I finally got round to finishing it.

Unreal 2 The awakening          - Different to the original, a bit like watching a film, but still good .

Half life (the original)               -  Easy kills but sometimes hard to know what to do next.

Half life Opposing force            - Black mesa from the soldiers angle.

Half Life 2                                   - Gordon Freeman's at it again

New world order                        - Buy it for £1.99, Stick in 1Gb of RAM and update it (VERY important) , It'll entertain you for a week.

Call of duty                                  - Defending Europe from the Nazi menace.

Call of duty 4 Modern warfare - Quite good on single player (campaign) mode but woefully short story.

C.O.D. United offensive          - Driving the Nazis out of Russia.

F.E.A.R.                                - Great storyline plus great enemy A.I. Played it through TWICE.

F.E.A.R.   perseus mandate     - Like FEAR but more fire-fights (and that's always good)

F.E.A.R.   Extraction point       - Alma's back for revenge, getting a bit "samey" now.

Quake 4                                - Half man , Half Strogg !

Far Cry 2                               - Played it through FOUR times now. Different every time.

Crysis                                   - A bit disappointing really, after all the hype. Might be better with a more expensive video card.

F.E.A.R. 2                                   - More of the same. But that's not a bad thing.

Rainbow 6 vegas                      - Starts off very uninspiring but stick with it, It really is worth it.

Rainbow 6 vegas 2                   - Starts where the previous one left off. Straight in with the action. Quite difficult to finish

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare- Good game but dissapointingly short single player campaign.

Now playing

F.E.A.R. 3

It's on Steam, which isn't a great start. It's also lost some of it's original, almost "cartoony" graphics style. I'm getting into it though. Paxton Fettel is not only back, but he is your brother, accompanyng you on missions. (But he's not much help).

Given up on ......

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl  -  Got fed up with the complicated inventory system.

Cold Fear                                      - Didn't go any further than the impossible to control storm on deck sequence.

Brothers in arms, Hill 30                 - Really tried a number of times but it just didn't grab me.

Serious Sam 2                               - Good fun for a few levels but got very "samey" and quite childish.

Ghost Recon 1                               - It was already a very old game when I bought it. Was probably OK in it's day

Rainbow 6 gold pack edition            - Again quite an old game when I got it. Don't like "Team control" games much anyway.

Paintball challenge                         - Just rubbish, even for the 99p I paid for it.

America's 10 most wanted               - Just ridiculous American propaganda game. Too playstationy for me.
